Catch Up

I've been trying to get my life back under control since New Year's. My family life has calmed down and I'm finally back on track with my degree, so I'll try to also get this blog back up and running.

So, quick rundown of the last... gosh, has it really been 5 months?

First of all, my biggest accomplishments, especially stash-wise: three blankets.

lcb_geometry ripple_afghan_done2
Finally, finally my Log Cabin Blanket Actually managed to use up most of my left-over sock yarn in a crochet afghan
~280,000 stitches, ~6,000 yards of yarn, 1.5 years to finish ~4,700 yards, less than a month to finish

Hemlock Ring Blanket, which I still have to block properly, I just don't have enough space here
less than 1,000 yards, a month to finish

For winter I needed a warm set of accessories. Five things made out of four skeins of Malabrigo Worsted in Azul Profundo. Very useful when I have to go grocery shopping on my bike.

Calorimetry

At first I only wanted to have cabled things in this set, but then the ribbed gloves were the most sensible thing to knit and the Calorimetry followed since I still had enough yarn. I really like that all of those match in colour, if not in pattern and they have been really useful. Especially the scarf is incredibly warm (even though I left out one repeat) and the Calorimetry has been getting *a lot* of use.

I've also knit four pairs of socks, but since I can't show my favourite pair yet (it was a test knit for Sock Madness), I'll just skip those here. One thing I want to show, however, is my French Market Bag. I have been meaning to knit this since I saw the pattern in Knitty and finally realised that my New Lanark Aran would be perfect for this. The bag has now become my to-knit-soon yarn bag.

If you'd like to have more information on the projects I mentioned here, or would like to see what else I have knit, I did keep up with my Ravelry page despite my hiatus here.

Yet Another Onset of Startitis...

It seems I get Startitis every couple of months, but this time I really did it. I not only started three new knitting projects,

Morning Surf ScarfCouplingShetland Shimmer

but also two crochet projects.

On a much more productive note, I finally finished the centre square of the Log Cabin blanket!

Well, almost finished...

Like almost anybody else I just hate weaving in ends, but am trying to be a good little knitter and do it as soon as I finish a sqaure, instead of waiting till the end.

In term paper news, I sent out most of the yarn and stitch markers, so they should arrive in while (remember they go overseas). :) 4 people still haven't answered my mails, so I'm going to try again this weekend and if they still haven't answered by next Sunday, I'll do a re-draw and let the new people know about their luck. :D

Figures.

Of course, the day after I write about haing SoSS, the new pattern for the last round of Sock Madness is released and I want to start knitting it right away.

I haven't started yet, however, because I'm still trying to finish the centre piece of the Log Cabin Blanket (I don't think I will succeed. That'd mean knitting over 15,000 stitches today in addition to a load of other work I have to do.) for my monthly goals. But at least I did some more work on it when I hadn't touched it since Easter.

But even though I haven't started the socks yet, I have selected the yarn for them.

(Click on the photo to see which yarns I chose)

The leg of the pattern is made from three stripes of triangles, so I chose three colour families and then 4 different yarns in each colour family to make the triangles from. I'm so excited to start these soon. :)

Also, today is the last day to fill out my Ravelry survey! Almost 1500 of you have filled it out already and I can't say how grateful I am for that. My professor was quite astonished when I met with him last week and told him the number. :)

Decisions, decisions...

I'm almost done with the next square for my Log Cabin Blanket and since my goal is to finally start on the centre piece I have to decide what it is supposed to look like. Or rather, I have to decide if the look I was going to do is still the one I want.

The right picture on this is the one I wanted to make, but now I'm not so sure.
  • It looks a bit chaotic, since it not only uses five colours, instead of three like the smaller squares, but also because the colours are separated from each other.
  • I use different amounts for the colour pairs (I need more lavender than grey and more light red than dark red) and I'm not sure if I'll have enough then to make all the 26 other squares.
  • It doesn't look very log cabin square-ly. My first smaller square was concipated in a similar manner, with the same colours opposite each other and I very much prefer to have at least two part of the same colour next to each other, so those fields of colour almost create an optical illusion, like the newer squares do. But since this is the center piece and kinda acts as a unfying element with all five colours, shouldn't it also be different from the smaller squares in other ways? I.e. in the distribution of colours?
The left one on the other hand is one I just thought up and I'm just not sure if I like it more. Sure it uses them same amount of colour for each colour in the pair and it's not as chaotic, but
  • isn't it too non-chaotic? The right one just seems to fit better into the surrounding mishmash of colour.
  • I think it might attract too much of the attention to itself, since the colour fields will be so big compared to the smaller squares. In the centre square, the white alone is the size of one of the small squares and the fields surrounding it get progressively bigger.
Hmm, I just managed to confuse myself again. I like the left one better for purely symmetrical reasons. In the middle row the reds come together with their counterparts, whereas in the right on, one is light red/light red, the other light red/dark red.

Not to mention that I'd rather not worry about if I'll have enough yarn (even though that seems kind ridiculous at the moment where I still have mountains of the stuff).

But I simply can't decide if the center square should be more integrated (right) or more of an actual centre piece, that pulls the attention towards it (left).

February and March

February was a bad month for knitting. I had exams in the middle of the month and just didn't get a lot of knitting done before. And since then I've knit quite a bit, but not enough to make up for the first 20 days. However, March should be much better since I'm on holiday and have time to knit. :)

(1) finish Ella
not done
I did a couple more repeats (no photos, sorry) and I'm almost to the decrease rows on the right side panel.

(2) finish Bellatrix
Done!

I started these before Momma Monkey died and felt a bit weird about finishing them afterwards, but then I realized what better way to honour the memory of a designer than by knitting her designs?

And the design is lovely. It looks a bit sloppy on my sock blockers, but on my feet they are great! :) A nice pattern for socks to just wear on those stay-at-home days. And I'm all geeked out about the fact that I knit the pattern in a colourway called Slytherin. So perfect.

(3) 2 more squares for the Log Cabin Blanket
Got 1 done and started another, which gets me to...

5 / 35 squares. 14% done!

(4) finish Felted Tote
finished knitting it and it's in the waching machine as I'm writing. I'm anxious if it works. *bites nails*
Here's the finished bag, with a DVD box for scale.

ETA: Just got it out of the machine and it looks like a success! But it's incredible how much it has shrunk. I can't imagine what the original tote was like which is knit with only 1/3 of the yarn I used.

Another pic while blocking with the DVD box for size comparison. The largest side is just a bit bigger than the DVD box.

(5) start Child's French Sock
Done! In fact, I got the whole first sock done. The yarn is Wollmeise sock yarn in Wilder Mohn (poppy), which is just an incredible yarn. It's so soft and squishy and it comes in 150g skeins, so I don't have to worry about running out of yarn even though this is the first sock I've knit top down in probably a year and a half?

(6) start Candle Flame Shawl
Done, but didn't get very far. I started it in some lace weight from Elann, but it was too thin for my taste. I think this'd be much nicer in some fingering weight or a slightly heavier lace weight, like Malabrigo Lace. For now I returned it to my queue and I'm focussing on other things.

Goals for March:
(1) finish Child's French Sock
(2) finish Ella
(3) 4 parts of the centre square of the Log Cabin Blanket (equivalent to 3 squares)
(4) knit So-Called Scarf in Malabrigo
(5) finish RPM socks (yes, I started another pair :), more in the next days)
(6) finish Felted Tote
(7) knit first Estonian Sock
(8) rip back top of Column of Leaves Hat and make longer

January and February

First of all, let's see what happened to the projects I planned to finish during January.

(1) Coronet
Done!

Once I actually sat down and picked up the stitches this was done so quickly. It's very warm and good to have something so bright with current rainy weather. Which brings me to...

(2) Danica
Done!

Haven't managed to get an FO photo yet, but it doesn't look that different since I only added 2 repeats to the length in the photo. It's a bit on the short side, but since I didn't want to buy yet another skein, I decided it's long enough. And it does go round my neck twice, so it's okay. A bit on the scratchy side, since it's not merino wool, but again very warm and colourful.

(3) 2 squares for the Log Cabin Blanket
Done!

Actually finished three squares, all in the lavender/grey combination.

It's just as pretty as the one in the two shades of red and I can't wait to make more.

4 / 35 squares. 12% done!

(4) knit Column of Leaves Hat
Done!

Knitted in worsted weight Malabrigo, I'm not quite sure yet with how this turned out. It could be a bit longer IMO. But the yarn is great and I can't decide what to do with the rest of the skein and the other skein I have in a different colourway.

(5) knit Bellatrix
WIP
I started to knit Bellatrix in Lorna's Laces Black Purl, but compared to the others I've seen on Ravelry, my colourway seems to be a bit darker, so I didn't like the way it looked.

So I frogged and started it in some lighter yarn, fittingly called Slytherin. :)

You can't quite see it on the picture (and the weather it too bad to take a better one), but the dropped stitches make the stripes move in wave form, which I think is very neat.

(6) start Ella
Done!

More than done actually, since I'm more than 50% in, just about in the middle of the first side panel. It takes a bit longer, since I'm using lighter yarn than in the pattern, and so added one repeat to the triangle part and also one repeat to each side panel. With the yarn I have I should be able to make 156 of the water lily leaves (at least they look to me that way) and I'll have to make 155, so keep your fingers crossed that my calculations were right.

(7) block Luna Moth Shawl
Done!

Finally, after 6 months of sitting there unblocked, I blocked it and put it on the wall as decoration since I wouldn't ever wear it and it's not really my Mum's colour. :)

Also, as you can see in the sock picture above, I made myself some very handy sockblockers.

Very easy to make following this tutorial.

So, my February resolutions:
(1) finish Ella
(2) finish Bellatrix
(3) 2 more squares for the Log Cabin Blanket
(4) finish Felted Tote
(5) start Child's French Sock
(6) start Candle Flame Shawl

As always, you can find more specs on all of my projects on my Ravelry page.

The Irrationality of Startitis

It's not like I don't have enough to do with my Dad's vest (going okay, even though I had to rip back the whole front – 40,555 stitches gone *weeps*, but still manageable at 833 stitches per day to go), my Mum's Lead or Follow scarf (getting more exhausting by the stitch and I have 3,685 of those to go in the next week and a half and then still the blocking, where I can just hope that it's done in a day, because otherwise I'll be sleeping on the floor... the wooden floor), or my Mum's Elfine socks (977 stitches per day, again manageable, but now that the first one is finished, kinda boring. I know that pattern by heart now, though, so it makes good TV knitting).

But no. I have to start something completely unrelated. Not enough that I had a little incident with the Koigu and the new entrelac pattern during the holidays, or that when I first got here, I was so enamoured with the rests of all my projects that I started a left-overs afghan, noooo. Now I had to start yet another afghan.

The yarn is Schachenmayr's Extra, 100% wool, 125m/50g in the colours white (3524), burgundy (3535) and jaspĂ© wine (3533) so far. I ordered it when it was on sale at an online shop for one (read that again, ONE) Euro a skein, when it normally retails for 3 or 3.30€ and got thirty skeins, five in white, fifteen in burgundy and ten in the jaspĂ© wine. Very pretty, they work well together, but then I started thinking and planning and walking slowly but steadily into my downfall.

The first clue was that I started looking at other colours that would go well with the ones I already had. I finally decided on a lavender (krokus, 3651) and grey tone (email meliert, 3550). Now, of course, I needed to know how much to order of each of these. So I started knitting.

7,200 stitches later, I knew that each block would take about 57g of yarn and I would be just fine if I had 10 skeins of each main colour (burgundy, wine, lavender and grey) and the five skeins of white for the centre. The other five skeins of wine are now reserved for the crocheting (probably crocheting, I'm not sure about that yet) together of the blocks and the border for the whole afghan. So I ordered the lavender when I found it pretty cheap on ebay (1.55€ a skein, still a good price), but haven't had any luck with the grey yet. But I have time.

Then I started playing around with the possibilities these amounts of yarn give me in terms of pattern combinations. I already know that I want the blocks to be log cabin squares, but with five colours there are still incredible amounts of possibilities, but I think I've found a few that will combine nicely and work out as a whole.

And those I then combined to get this overall pattern. Size should be around 1.94m x 1.40m (~ 6'6'' x 4'8'') and it 'only' has a staggering 252,000 stitches.

Of course this isn't the first try at those diagrams. I already tried a practise square, but I don't like the same colour meeting in adjacent rows, so I changed that. Which also means that I have to rip back the square. I'm consoling myself with the fact that some parts of it weren't perfect anyway and that it was more like a very big swatch.

Things I'm going to change are:

1.the cast on was a long tail cast on, but it bunches unattractively with the picked up stitches and separates too much from the rest of the white square, so now I use a crochet provisional cast on instead, then pick up the stitches and bind them off with the same bind off I use on the other ends (k2togs all the way)

2.the line between the white centre and first block of red is blurred unattractively on the left side where one of the white stitches goes up into the red area. The pattern I used said to simply continue knitting the white stitches, without binding off, so I did that. Not so pretty. So I'll definitely bind off there as well and pick up the stitches in red again.

3.One of the picked up stitches goes to far into the white block. I still was training how to pick up stitches along a garter stitch edge.

4.Unattractive picking up of the bind off edge. I tried picking up only one of the strands of the bound off stitches, but found that I like it much better the way I did it with the next block: picking up the whole stitch. Although that creates a slight ridge on the back, it looks much neater in the front and doesn't interrupt the pattern the way the other pick up does.

5.And finally, of course, the colour combinations, which will hopefully make this look more like a log square, rather than some random blurbs of colour. It will also make the weaving in much less of a core, because it'll reduce the number of ends to weave in from 18 to eight. Still angst inducing considering I'm planing on knitting 26 small squares, but better.

And now, off to some birthday knitting.

Holiday Pair #2 Done

I really have been knitting too much in the last days. I'm supposed to be studying for an exam at the beginning of May... well... at least I got some things finished. First of all my Tipsy Knitter Socks from Socks, Socks, Socks. Excuse the crappy photos, but it's difficult to take good photos of your own feet.

Image hosting by Photobucket

And two details of the pattern: Image hosting by Photobucket
Image hosting by Photobucket

Yarn: Schachenmayr Catania, pink, 2 skeins and a bit
Needles: 7 3mm DPNs
Gauge: Eh... bit bigger than what was suggested in the book
Started: February 2006
Finished: Apr 16, 2006

Then I finally worked again on my Pomatomus socks. I decided to work both of them at the same time, so hopefully I can evade SSS.

Image hosting by Photobucket

And I finally got the chance to take a photo of the present I gave my parents for Christmas.

Image hosting by Photobucket

This blanket is about 1.60mx1.30m (5'4"x4'4") (You can just see my mum standing behind it :D), knit with 4mm needles and about 1.5kg of (50/50 wool/acrylic) yarn. Three colours, millions of colour changes, 150,000 stitches, done in about 3 months. Pattern is adapted from here. The initials are actually more symmetrical than they look in the picture. I worked with provisional cast-ons so the blanket would look as if it was made from 3 pieces, but in fact it was 6 pieces + the lighter areas in the middle to join the pieces. (I got really good at grafting after doing that for 600 stitches)

And I have been on the lookout for yarn for a few new projects. Come Spetember I'm going to be in Scotland for 10 months, so I need warm things. :D I'm thinking a scarf/mittens/hat combination to start with. With cables. The hat is going to be Coronet from Knitty and the mittens Broadstreet Mittens from Knitty with the Coronet cable down the upper side. I'm probably going to make up the scarf pattern with the same cable and some others to frame it.

The only problem so far is finding the right yarn. I know I want a cranberry colour. I also know I don't want 100% wool. I was thinking merino wool, but then decided that my experience with it so far means it's too elastic. So perhaps a merino wool/silk blend? At about 80m/50g. I've had no luck at my LYS and online I'm a bit iffy, because I've been disappointed in the colours before. And all the great online shops are in the US, so I'll either have to pay exorbitant shipping or can't order there at all because they don't ship internationally (Knitpicks... grrr...).

Strangely my mum found it weird that I wanted to know when my uncle from the US visited us again, so I could have an order sent to him and he could bring it with him. That's not weird, is it? ... Didn't think so. ;)
